The invisible chemicals in a new room: formaldehyde and VOCs

That 'new furniture' or 'fresh paint' smell is a cocktail of gases. Most are harmless - a couple aren't.

Bring a new sofa, a freshly painted wall, or flat-pack furniture into a room and you’ll often notice a smell. That’s volatile organic compounds - VOCs - evaporating from adhesives, finishes, foams and coatings. Most are merely irritants, but two that routinely turn up indoors, formaldehyde and benzene, are classified as carcinogenic to humans. [11]

Where it comes from

Common indoor sources include particleboard and MDF furniture, laminate flooring, paints and varnishes, glues, some cleaning products and air fresheners, and tobacco smoke. Emissions are highest when materials are new and tail off over weeks to months. [11]

What to do about it

Three levers, in order. Choose low-emission materials where you can (low-formaldehyde boards, low-VOC paints). Ventilate generously, especially in the first weeks after a renovation or a furniture delivery. And use activated-carbon filtration to mop up what remains - carbon adsorbs many gases that a HEPA filter passes straight through. [11]
