How we actually know radon causes lung cancer
Not a hunch - decades of converging evidence, from uranium miners to a pooled study of thousands of ordinary homes.
Radon’s danger isn’t theoretical, and it isn’t new. The story starts underground: uranium miners exposed to high radon concentrations showed sharply elevated lung-cancer rates, and on that evidence the International Agency for Research on Cancer classified radon a Group 1 human carcinogen - the same top category as tobacco smoke and asbestos - back in 1988. [3]
The harder question was whether the lower levels found in ordinary buildings matter too. It was settled by pooling the individual data from 13 European case-control studies - more than 7,000 lung-cancer patients and 14,000 controls. Risk rose steadily with measured radon, the relationship was essentially a straight line, and, crucially, it stayed statistically significant even below 200 Bq/m³. There was no threshold beneath which the risk vanished. [9]
The mechanism
The reason there’s no safe floor is in how the damage happens. Radon decays into short-lived radioactive products that you inhale; each one emits an alpha particle - a concentrated burst of energy - into the cells lining the lung. A single track can damage DNA, so the harm accumulates with every year of exposure rather than waiting for some threshold to be crossed. [4]
What the numbers mean for you
WHO distils the long-term evidence to roughly a 16% increase in lung-cancer risk per 100 Bq/m³ of average exposure. [1] Radon and smoking also multiply each other: a smoker in a high-radon building carries far more risk than adding the two factors would suggest. That interaction is why a workplace measurement is worth taking seriously rather than filing away unread.
